The wedding ceremony itself is usually accompanied by both a religious and civil services, but there are many different traditions that make up polish wedding cultures. Another classic Polish ceremony history is zmowiny – this is where the relatives of the wedding and wife meet for the first time. The auberge d’ or circle leader does declare the parents, who then come to a little table with bread and salt. The wheat symbolizes the hope that the couple did never experience hunger and the salt reminds them that life may sometimes get difficult and they must learn to cope along.
After the assessment of bread and salt, the couple has their earliest toast- generally this is a shot of vodka passed from person to person. The couple drinks from their glasses and, according to tradition, whoever ends up with the glass of vodka will wear the pants in the relationship!
